17 years ago, Kalle W. suffered a stroke. Since then, he can only use one arm without restriction. As riding a conventional bicycle was no longer possible, he switched to a recumbent tricycle. With this, he now regularly undertakes long journeys again - despite his physical disability.
The biggest hurdle was: securing the recumbent bicycle independently with a conventional bicycle lock was impossible with only one hand.
The Problem: When a Bicycle Lock Becomes a Barrier
Traditional bicycle locks require complex fine motor skills and the use of both hands. For people with one-sided paralysis, they become an insurmountable barrier.
This is a significant issue: Independent action, without constantly relying on the help of others, is crucial for quality of life. If this is not possible, beloved activities – like cycling – may not be pursued at all. Kalle therefore searched for a long time for a bicycle lock on the market that could be operated with just one hand.
Why the Smart I LOCK IT Frame Lock is the Perfect Solution for One-Sided Arm Paralysis
A keyless bicycle lock with smart operation fundamentally solves the problem of one-sided restriction and is therefore ideal for Kalle's bike rides:
- Keyless operation: The smart frame lock opens and closes completely digitally – without complex fine motor skills, e.g., to turn a key.
- Automatic bicycle lock opening (Keyless Go): The lock detects the smartphone in the pocket and unlocks itself upon approach.
- Comfortable bicycle lock with remote control: Attached to the handlebars or clothing, the remote can be controlled at the touch of a button – with just one hand.
Maximum theft protection without effort: Integrated alarm and GPS tracking offer full security without having to handle heavy, cumbersome chains.
I LOCK IT on recumbent bikes: Mounting despite structural challenges
A recumbent bicycle for people with disabilities differs significantly in construction from classic bicycles. In Kalle's model, there simply wasn't enough space on the rear wheels to attach a conventional frame lock.
Instead of giving up on the project, Kalle contacted I LOCK IT. Our service team thought intensively about how the smart frame lock could be adapted for Kalle's special case. The customized solution: Mounting directly on the front wheel.
Important note on recumbent bike mounting: We normally advise against front wheel mounting. However, with a three-wheeled recumbent bicycle, the center of gravity shifts backwards, which minimizes the risk of accidents. Therefore, we approved front wheel mounting in this specific case.
Conclusion: Regained Independence in Everyday Life
Kalle's recumbent bicycle experiences show that thanks to intuitive operation via smartphone or remote control, Kalle no longer needs outside help to secure his bike. The smart lock has completely restored his mobility and freedom for spontaneous excursions, as well as his enjoyment of them.
